Gemini Sailing Boat Specs
It is Gemini’s crew who create the experience which brings our guests back year after year.
Our extraordinary crew makes sure all our passengers have a memorable sail;
and we know they do an incredible job as the guest book is filled with comments like
“this was the best day of our vacation”. Meet the Crew!
Steve, Gemini’s Operations Manager, grew up in England and in the Swiss Alps, and at the age of 17 shipped off to sea with the Greek Merchant Navy, where he became a 2nd Officer and traveled around most of the world. After a couple of seasons teaching in the Swiss Ski School, Steve immigrated to Canada where, after taking his Helicopter License, he became a ‘bush pilot’ and flew in the high Arctic and British Columbia for 12 years. Steve joined us in 1992 and he maintains Gemini like a helicopter! Steve is a great inventor, he loves traveling and is writing his memoir.
Captain David has been named ‘Keeper of all memories for this Ocean Tribe’ He joined us in 1985 as crew & naturalist and later Captain on our original boat SuperStar. David grew up in Indiana graduating from Princeton with a degree in psychology. After teaching sailing at Club Med in Kauai, the Bahamas, Cancun, Israel, Yugoslavia, Guadeloupe, Martinique, in the Dominican Republic and Italy; David arrived on Maui to continue teaching at the newly opened Ka’anapali Alii. Over the years he has taken many Naturalist training courses and has become an avid student of Hawaii’s Marine Environment, History and Culture.
At a very young age, Captain Jake realized that he wanted to spend his life working around the ocean. Jake grew up on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina and as kids, he and his twin brother learnt to sail on their 16’ Prindle. Over the years, he has sailed in the Caribbean and the North and South Pacific Ocean. Jake began his career as a Lifeguard, moving up to Beach Patrol; and over the next three years he saved 37 lives, rescuing many more. Jake has captained a variety of boats in both South Carolina and Maui where he moved in 1998; he became a Captain on Gemini in 2007.
Captain Eric grew up in Southern California earning a Business Administration degree. He moved to Maui where he taught windsurfing at the newly opened Westin Maui and in September 1991 he came aboard as one of Gemini’s first deckhands. After a stint in Lake Tahoe, Eric returned to Maui, earned his Captain’s license and worked his way up to Senior Captain on another Ka’anapali Cat. Eric loves kite boarding, mountain biking and traveling; he has been to the South Pacific, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, South America and Africa. He happily returned to Captain Gemini in 2007.
Linda grew up water-skiing on the lakes in Michigan, and studied photography and computer programming at a local college. Changing her focus, she began working in the music industry in artist management on an international level. In 1993 Linda was ready for a change, and after reading the first chapter of James Michener’s ‘Hawaii’, knew she wanted to move to the islands. She took a job in guest relations at one of Ka’anapali’s Resorts, and in 2001, after many trips out on her favorite boat, began working as crew on Gemini. Linda also teaches aerobics, practices yoga, and still enjoys water-skiing weekly.
Andrew grew up in Burlington, in Ontario, Canada where he graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Marine Biology. He volunteered doing research on Whale Sharks in Belize and then restoring habitat for the Yellow -eyed Penguins in New Zealand. Later, Andrew moved to Alaska and worked for the National Marine Fisheries as a boat observer. After moving to Maui and working as naturalist for several other charter companies, Andrew joined Gemini as crew and Naturalist in December 2006.
Olie grew up in Maui and has spent his entire life on or around boats and the ocean; in fact he took his first steps aboard our 76’ schooner, Crystal Anna where he lived the first year of his life. Olie is an avid diver and spear fisherman, skim boarder and surfer, locally sponsored skateboarder and student of JuJitzu. Olie began officially crewing on Gemini during his summer vacation in 2005; he now works onboard year round and is logging his sea-time with the goal of taking his Captain’s license.
Rosemary sailed to the Big Island and we all met while in dry dock in Kona, and two years later she joined Gemini’s Crew. Rosemary grew up in Minnesota with four brothers, so working with all the guys was never a problem for her, and they soon named her ‘the Gem of Gemini’. In 2006, having over-stressing her shoulder for years, Rosemary retired from Gemini. In 2007 an office position opened and we are happy to say that she is back working with us ‘behind the scenes’. Rosemary loves spending time on their land in Hana.
And, last but never least Captain J, who since moving back to the mainland in 2007; comes back to step in when one of Gemini’s captains is on vacation. J grew up in Idaho, and when he moved to Maui with his family in 1980 he took a job as crew on a Ka’anapali Boat. After attending the University of Washington and graduating in 1987 with a degree in Biology, J returned to Maui. A couple of years later, he arrived onboard Gemini as a Videographer, soon becoming one of Gemini’s first deckhands. Over the years, J worked his way up to becoming Gemini’s Senior Captain.
